Inclement Weather Updates 2024

Weather Update from Farm & Wilderness

August 9th, 1:45 PM

A Tornado Watch has been issued for Rutland/Windsor County. We have been under a tornado watch previously and under these circumstances we monitor the weather.   A gentle reminder that a weather "watch" means the conditions exist for such a weather event to be possible, where a "warning" would mean that the weather event was actually occuring.  Currently we are experiencing light rain and the forecast predicts showers this evening.

August 1, 8am

Camp programming is proceeding as scheduled.

July 31, 7:30 PM

Our Plymouth area has experienced heavy intermittent showers over the course of the afternoon and early evening.   There is no road damage here at camp and program has continued as it would under our usual rainy conditions.   The St. Johnsbury areas is the only area in Vermont currently under a Flash Food Warning.  St. Johnsbury is 90 miles to the North of Farm & Wilderness.

July 31, Noon

Out of an abundance of caution, the Barn Day Camp will dismiss at 2pm today. This is to ensure families aren't on the road during the most intense part of the storms predicted to come through our area later this afternoon. The Barn Day Camp Hawk/Raven campers and counselors have already set out on their trips and their locations are nearby on our property in shelters. They will arrive to their locations ahead of the weather's arrival and they have the provisions and counselor leadership to remain on their trips safely through the weather. Our team is keeping our attention on the weather and are prepared to evacuate trips if necessary.

The expectation is that camp will proceed as scheduled tomorrow, including setting out on their Barn Day Camp overnights.

We will update this page and alert camper families by 7am Thursday should anything change.

July 11th 1:00 PM

As of this posting the weather we are experiencing and the weather patterns forecast for the rest of this week do not necessitate extraordinary measures.   When we are under a severe weather warnings, we will update this page.

July 11th 6:20 AM

There was light rain over the evening, no damage.  Programming planned to  carry on as usual today.  Forecast gives a 30% chance of rainfall of less than a tenth of an inch.  Possibility of scattered heavy showers before 10am.

July 10th 8:30 PM

There has been little to no rain here for the past several  hours.  Currently the National Weather Service forecast for today states: " A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely after 9pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Cloudy, with a low around 69. South wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible"    Tomorrow's forecast:  "A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly between 8am and 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 82."

July 10th 3:45 PM

Barn Day Camp plans to have Adventure Day tomorrow Thursday July 11th.

If weather conditions are poor, some Adventure Days may be relocated from off-site to here on Woodward.  If  Vermont Transit Authority recommends road travel should be limited to emergency vehicles due to excessive weather conditions then BDC families will recieve an email by 7:00 AM and a cancellation notice will be posted on this web page.   Please bookmark this page for quick reference.

The expectation is that camp and Adventure Day and the Barn Day Camp will proceed as scheduled tomorrow.

July 10th, 3:15 PM

Currently it is humid and sunny in Plymouth.  We're forecast to have showers starting in 2.5 hours, with more rain in at night between 1-3AM

July 10th, 3:00 PM

Vermont is due to experience severe rainstorms over the next 24-48 hours. In response, our team

  • Began preparations several days ago, when we received the first warning about severe weather from the state.
  • Has limited F&W transportation to essential and emergency travel only for July 10th and 11th. Staff with personal vehicles can choose to travel.
  • Enacted program interruption plans which entail postponing off-site activities, including trips that were due to depart Wednesday.   The creative arts immersion at Tamarack Farm has postponed their field trip to an outdoor sculpture park.  Firefely Song First Lodge two-night trips due to depart today will have a campout at Cozy Lodge and, weather depending, may spend Thursday night at our shelters around Lake Ninevah, as planned.
  • Continues to monitor weather and conditions in areas where we have trips out (trip leaders are trained in Wilderness First Aid and in our Emergency Action Plan).   We are prepared to evacuate trips if necessary.
  • Follows updates and advisories  from  Vermont Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service, which has a Vermont bureau. We are in regular communication with town and county emergency services, and several of our staff are part of the local emergency responder team.

Our emergency action plan prioritizes having all campers and staff remain at their respective camps which are well-resourced with shelter, food, care and communications. In the event that our facilities, access to electricity and/or internet is impacted, we have contingencies.

We are keenly aware of the trust you’ve placed in us to take good care of your young children and teenagers. And want to assure you that we have plans in place to enable campers and staff to “do camp” regardless of the weather and all the buzz about it in the news.   We have a wonderfully well-prepared team to feed, care for and engage our campers so they can "Keep Calm and Carry On”.
